Determining the position of a laser beam comprises guiding a laser head (1) fixed on a robot arm (3) over a workpiece (11), scanning the surface of the workpiece with a deflecting device for the laser beam, following the impact point of the laser beam on the surface with cameras (16, 17), deriving actual positions of the laser beam from the camera signals, and calculating the positions from the deviations between the theoretical positions and the actual positions.
