The method involves controlling a starting torque reduction of an engine when a vehicle speed is under an upshift. A reference deviation is determined based on a non-linear function of a vehicle speed. A determination is made whether a current vehicle speed is within a reference deviation. The torque reduction control of the engine is finished when the current vehicle speed is within the reference deviation. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling an engine of a vehicle during an upshift.
