The probe (100) has ferromagnetic sense core (102) with a pair of sensing end portions, and a sense coil (104) wound about the core. The core located with respect to laminated teeth (37) defines air gaps between opposed surfaces of adjacent teeth between which the probe is disposed, and respective ends of the core. The core has laminated layers with high initial permeability and high resistivity characteristics. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a sensing apparatus for detecting abnormalities in an electrical device having an effective wedge depression of not more than 200mm. (b) a method for detecting faults in an electrical device with an effective wedge depression depth of no more than 200mm.
