The barrier has a light detector at a distance from a light source. A reflection system (15) is provided with two reflecting surfaces (21, 23) perpendicular to each other. The surface (23) is formed with a pair of part reflecting surfaces which are perpendicular to one another and to respective reflecting surface (21). Spacing for one pair of part reflection surfaces is smaller than that of the pair of large part reflection surfaces. An independent claim is also included for a bank note processing machine.
