The device has two independently operated shift elements (2,3). They have a common plate bearer for outer or inner plates of both elements. Each element has a piston (23) and closing pressure chamber (24,34) for actuation. There is at least one restoring element (27,37,39) for the piston in the plate bearer radially above its associated plates and an additional secondary piston (26,36) acting on the associated plates against the restoring force. An independent claim is also included for the following: a method of controlling an inventive device.
