Instruments (7, 17) measure the speeds: (V 1) at which thread is transferred at the feed unit (5), and the winding speed (V 2) at the take-up bobbin (15). A display (22) shows the difference in speed (V 12) between these results. It displays variation (delta V 12) in the speed difference itself. In addition or alternatively, equipment (8, 18) controls the number of supply revolutions (N 1) and the number of take-up revolutions (N 2). A signal is produced, to control the rate of thread transfer. This is transmitted to the supply and take-up drives (6, 16), whenever (V 12) and/or (delta V 12) exceed(s) a given limiting value (LV, Ldelta V). The feed system (5) comprises two counter-rotating spinning rollers at right angles to the thread. They oscillate axially in opposed phase, between limiting positions. Details are provided of the sensing units and computer(s) employed to take and process the measurements, and to initiate control actions. A traversing thread guide (12) is included to wind the bobbin, together with associated thread speed measurement equipment. Thread tension is also measured between feed- and take-up bobbins.
