The transfer device has means (8) for lifting and lowering the containers and at least two transverse slide devices (7) with support arms either side engaging underneath the transport container (3). The transverse slide device comprises a stationary base frame with intermediate support and rollers. Two positive locking flexible transfer members guided over guide pulleys are fixed by their lower ends to the base frame and by their upper ends to the support arm to produce the displacement between the intermediate support and support arm. The intermediate support contains a motor with two drive wheels each engaging with one of the transfer means. The intermediate support and support arm can each be moved longitudinally maximum by half their structural length.
