The portable unit (1) to pass carbonic acid into liquids, to make them effervescent, has a one-piece housing with at least one inner threading (5) at the connection (4) for a liquid container and a further inner threading (3) at the connection (2) for a disposable gas cartridge. A valve (7) is between the two connections, with a valve control button (8). A tube (10) carries the gas into the liquid container, and a further valve (11) relieves overpressure within the liquid container. The connection for the liquid container has two thread, to allow use of plastics bottles and standard sparkling water bottles. The cartridge connection can also be linked to a gas bottle.
