The glue application device for the applying of an adhesive layer on a defined surface of a workpiece (13) has a glue transfer unit with a glue sump (6) into which is poured from a container a portioned amount of glue for each glue transfer cycle. A glue transfer plunger (15) is movably guided on a guide device (5) in such a way that the plunger after the pouring of glue into the sump is pressed against it, and then moved up to the workpiece holder (12), and finally moved back to the sump for a new glue transfer cycle.
