Insect protection, e.g. for a fixed umbrella or parasol has a fine mesh screen draped over the umbrella and reaching to the ground. Access is via an opening flap (40) secured by sliding clasp fastener, press tapes, magnetic strips or any other suitable means. The screen can be provided with elastic holes (30) which fit over the outer ends of the umbrella ribs and can be further secured by elastic ties. The insect curtain system can be adapted to fit over other outdoor features, e.g. pavilions.
