A hydromechanical braking strut which holds a vehicle door securely in any selected setting has a hydraulic piston mounted on a piston rod (1) and with two sets of opposing flow ducts (11, 12) through the piston. Each side of the piston is fitted with a spring loaded closure ring (10, 13) which closes each set of ducts. This locks the strut in any selected position. Manual force applied to the door in either direction operates the piston rod in either direction and opens one set of flow ducts against the spring force of the appropriate closure ring.
