The engine oil washed cylinder of a water cooled internal combustion engine has a cavity between the cooling water and cylinder wall. This cavity is designed with an additional cylinder wall so that an adequate oil throughflow is made possible. The cavity is designed so that the primary cylinder wall has a higher temperature so that thermal losses in the working cycle are significantly lower. The thermal losses with existing internal combustion engines come to about 30 per cent. This can be significantly less with the oil washed cylinder.
