Apparatus for transferring proteins or nucleic acids from a gel (40) to a transfer membrane (50), is new. Apparatus for transferring proteins or nucleic acids from a gel (40) to a transfer membrane (50) comprises a trough (10) filled with buffer, above which a support (20) is mounted. A strip of absorbent paper (30) hangs over this and dips in the buffer. The gel stands on this with the membrane above it. Several layers of absorbent paper (60) are placed on top of the membrane and are pressed down by a weight (100). The novelty is that the weight is mounted on a rod (110) which fits into the arm of a stand (120) above the trough and that it has the same shape and size as the gel, ensuring uniform weight distribution.
