The person using the device slides down a cable (4) whilst holding a first end of a handle (1), the second end containing a first channel. A hand lever (2) has a first end pivotally connected to the first end of the handle and a second end which can be rotated relative to the handle between a locking position and a released position. The handle also contains a second channel which combines with the first channel to form a gap with a pre- determined size that acts as a passage for the cable, providing a pre-determined degree of friction between the cable and channels when the lever is in the locking position.
