A cycling machine with a magnetically retarding brake and a stop brake has a curved braking lever (20) hinged at one end with a permanent magnet and a brake shoe at the free end. The brake lever is positioned over the rim of the flywheel (14) and is pulled away from the wheel by a spring. A threaded adjuster (31 to 39) has a thrust head (39) pushing down on the brake lever to vary the magnetic drag. The brake lever operates against spring pressure and has an end setting where the brake shoe is clamped onto the wheel rim. A nut (37) on the adjuster sets the lower limit of the brake.
