A hopper(1) for receiving loose material(3) is filled on a charge basis. Tranducers(6a,6b) determines the weight of material in the hopper and thus the weight decrease between each filling of a conveying screw(4). A mechanical conveying aid(1d) in the hopper can be extended in order to achieve a constant conveying rate into conveying screw). The mechanical conveying aid(1d) comprises a flexible wall in the hopper(1). Bulk density of the material(3) during conveyer(4) filling can be varied by deforming the flexible wall with air or fluid pressure either at specific times or with variable amplitude. Weight decrease of material in the hopper can be measured at variable time intervals to enable the throughput to be calculated.
