Switching unit with a personal identification capability is used to switch an electrical device on or off if a user is correctly identified and authorized. The inventive unit has an optical to digital electrical signal converter, a switching unit and an electronic data processing unit. Typically a user is biometrically identified using a scanner incorporated in an operating switch. The switching unit can additionally be programmed to record usage times for each user and to limit user usage times to defined periods.
