A method for profiling the ends of bristles in the manufacture of toothbrushes has a rotating grinding and polishing head (7) comprising stacks of abrasive polishing discs (8). The rotating head is aligned with its axis normal to the conveyor feed with the discs reaching a preset depth into the bristles. The sides and ends of the bristles are shaped and any sharp profiles are removed. The shaping discs can be angled on their axes to provide a swashplate type action for added profiling.
