An electromagnetic brake with quiet operation, e.g. for a lift, has brake linings applied directly to an anchor plate and with a pot core (3, 4) mechanically connected to the anchor plate and with a similar gap as the brake. The pot core is connected between the AC supply and a rectifier bridge (11). An inductive monitoring system measures the gap between the brake linings and controls the solenoid action to retard the brake application before the brake linings contact, i.e. to provide a quiet brake engagement.
