The holder for especially kitchen knives of different lengths comprises a block with slots open on its longitudinal sides for the insertion of the knives. The slots have at least two different depths and/or lengths. The slots extend parallel to one another, with long and deep slots (2) and short and less deep slots (2') in the knife block (1). The long and deep slots alternate with the short and less deep slots. Over at least one section of slots the slot depth for each individual slot varies, preferably in steps, over its length.
