The release element (15) for use in a locking system for especially breakaway coupling units (10) with two coupling halves (11,12) releasably interconnected by a locking element (14) is constructed for the locking of the locking element contact-free in relation to the coupling halves. The release element is dimensioned so that in the connected state of the coupling halves it is exclusively in direct functional communication with locking element. The release element is in the form of a ring constructed in such a way that it is supported in relation to the locking element. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a locking system for the connecting and releasing of two coupling halves and incorporating the aforesaid release element; and (B) a breakaway coupling for the connecting of lines transporting liquid or gaseous media and incorporating the aforesaid locking system.
