The gripper for use with a crane has two horizontally spaced gripper arms (2a,2b). The horizontal distance between the individual gripper arms and the suspension unit (13) for hanging the gripper on the crane jib can be adjusted whilst keeping the internal width between the arms constant by horizontally moving the suspension element and gripper arms relative to each other thereby adapting the gripper unit to the centre of gravity of the material being lifted. The suspension element can be moved along a horizontal plane between the gripper arms and is preferably mounted on a linearly displaceable slide carriage (10) which can be remote-controlled.
