Apparatus for producing hydrogen comprises a heated steam reforming zone (1) and a catalytic conversion zone (2). An evaporator (3) is mounted between the two zones and has a pipe (4) passing through it to transfer heat from the reformer products to water from the steam reforming stage. The pipe contains a metal mesh packing (5) to produce turbulence and improve heat transfer.
