The rectangular flat workpieces (3) are brought to the inlet zone (1) of a profiling machine by a conveyer (2). The profiling zone (18) is used for shaping the longitudinal edges of each workpiece so that they are parallel. The inlet zone has a transport device (4), running synchronously with the workpiece conveyer. A guide straight edge runs along one side and the other side has a pressure device urging the workpiece towards the straight edge. An upper pressure device (14) is arranged above the transport device and there are circular saws (17) for cutting at least one guide groove in the upper or lower sides of the workpieces. A guide track (24) extends beyond the sawing tools.
