A method to control the topography of an adhesive surface by contacting a micro-embossed pattern to a layer of adhesive and forming a micro-replicated adhesive surface, when an adhesion interface is established between the layer of adhesive and a supporting substrate. The topography of the adhesive surface controls the performance of the adhesion interface between adhesive and supporting substrate. Also claimed are (i) an article comprising a layer of adhesive having an interconnected micro-replicated adhesive surface; and (ii) a method of using a release liner having a micro-embossed pattern. Preferably the contact step consists of casting techniques, coating techniques or compressing techniques. Casting technique comprises using a tool having a micro-embossed pattern; coating technique comprises coating an adhesive onto a release liner having a micro-embossed pattern; and the compressing technique comprises passing through a nip roll to compress pressure sensitive adhesive against a release liner. Micro-embossed pattern on the tool is formed by etching, photolithography, stereolithography, micromachining, knurling, scoring or cutting. Pattern resides on a release liner or on a tape backing. Pattern is a multiple micro-embossed pattern. Rheology of the adhesive retains the micro-replicated adhesive surface for an effective period of time. Method further comprises contacting the micro-replicated adhesive surface to the supporting substrate to provide controlled fluid egress from the interface between the adhesive surface and the supporting substrate.
