The programmable video recorder includes a user input device, a memory and a controller selectively operable to enable programming of the video recorder according to several regimes. The controller is also operable to store data representing the last used regime in memory and to affect programming of the video recorder according to the regime identified by data stored in the memory in response to a command, input using the user input device. - The video is programmable for unattended operation. The video has a clock and the controller determines whether the clock is set with current time and if not the video is controlled according to a clock setting routine. Uses microcomputer for controller and memory.
