A method for producing a captive nut with an improved grip to the mounting panel uses square cut blanks which a preformed by a press operation and punched to form the mounting hole to take the screw fitting after cutting the thread. Before, or after punching the hole the base of the nut is pressed to form a lip (36) around the hole. The nut is pressed into a hole in the mounting panel and the lip is pressed to grip the edge of the mounting hole.
