The instrument (10), made e.g. from moulded plastic for use once only, is in the shape of a spoon with a handle (12) and a bowl (14) with a toothed front edge (32) and at least one side cutting edge (22). The interior of the bowl has projections (34) with tapering forward and perpendicular rear surfaces to retain the sample as the instrument is withdrawn.
