A method for treating an aqueous effluent containing organic matter in a solution, comprising the following successive steps: the effluent is made basic; said effluent which is made basic is mineralized by bringing it into contact with a gaseous oxidation reactant; the mineralized basic effluent is made acidic; the effluent which is made acidic is mineralized once more by bringing it into contact with the gaseous oxidation reactant.
