The process takes physiological data such as electrocardiograms and samples the acquired electrical waveform (1) at a given frequency. The first derivative (D') of the sampled data (D) is calculated (4). The second derivative (D'') of the acquired data (D) is calculated (9). A predictive analysis of the sampled data is made as a function of the first and second derivatives which allows a choice of coding methods (11,12,13) which are predetermined and dynamically switchable in a manner which minimises the volume of data to be recorded. The data is compressed by the coding method chosen in the previous stage and stored (14).
