A process for the production of a trimelliticacid by oxidizing dialkyl aromatic aldehyde and/or itsoxide derivative in a liquid phase, the oxidation beingcarried out in a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid solventhaving a water content of 5 to 70 % by weight in thepresence of a catalyst containing a heavy metal and bromineor being carried out in a solvent containing a loweraliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a bromine-manganese catalyst system containing zirconium and/orcerium, and a process for the production of high-qualitytrimellitic acid anhydride from the trimellitic acid.Figure 1
