In another embodiment, the invention provides a composition suitable for topical application comprising: an effective amount of a vasoactive agent, a polymer thickener, a lipophilic component, and a buffer system. The invention also provides methods of ameliorating female sexual dysfunction. Also provided are methods of increasing female sexual arousal and methods of enhancing female sexual response.
