A catalytic composition for the oligomerization of olefins and in particular ethylene, comprises: at least one nickel complex resulting from the contact of a nickel salt with a bidentate chelating ligand that combines a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound with an alcohol; - and optionally a hydrocarbylaluminum compound chosen from the group formed by the tris (hydrocarbyl) aluminum, the chlorinated or brominated hydrocarbylaluminum compounds and the aluminoxanes.on also describes the method of oligomerization of olefins using this catalytic composition.
