The method involves determining a load level of a drive of an infinitely variable transmission, and a speed of a thermal engine, by a determination unit (36). Intermediate control signals (V1, V2) are obtained by adjusting the determined values. The signals in the drive control torque signals of electric machines, are separated by a decoupling unit (35). The speed is controlled in a brake mode, using the torque signals. An independent claim is also included for a device to control a drive train with an infinitely variable transmission in retro mode for implementing a method of controlling the drive train.
