Preparation of a fatty acid ester and pure glycerine involves the reaction of a vegetable or animal oil with a 1 - 18C aliphatic monoalcohol in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst comprising oxides of aluminum and titanium. The mixed oxide catalyst conforms to the formula (TiO x) y(Al 2O 3) 1- y(I); x : 1.5 - 2.2; and y : 0.005 - 1.
