The invention relates to a method for monitoring the operational state of a particle filter (3) fitted to a heat engine (1) and comprising, from upstream to downstream, inlet and outlet cavities (3a, 3b ) separated from each other by porous walls, this method comprising an iterative processing step during which calculations are carried out involving a physical model and knowable physical quantities, in order to produce an indicator d state linked to the operational state of the filter. According to the invention, the processing step produces an estimate of the state indicator based on estimates of a parameter of disturbance of the filter and pressure operation and temperature in the input cavity, and provides a diagnosis of the state of the filter by comparison of the estimate of the state indicator with one or more calibrated threshold values, each of which is representative of a limiting case of operation state filter.
