The method involves defining a threshold for convergence of a measured quality of service towards a target quality of service. Value of signal to interference ratio is reduced by reducing values of respective increment and decrement constants, when the convergence threshold is reached. The quality of service is measured by block error rate or by binary error rate on exchanged signals. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a mobile terminal; and (b) a base station.
