The cage (1) has an elongated shape that allows it to hold a single animal positioned so that its spine is basically parallel to the cage's lengthwise axis. It has an access gate formed by one of the cage's side walls (6) which lies parallel to its lengthwise axis when closed and can be locked in its closed position by a mechanism comprising two articulated arms (10, 14), one of which has a series of teeth (11) under one end to engage with a plate (9) on the top of the gate. One of the arms (14) is connected to a pivot (8) on the gate, and the other (10) to a pivot (7) on the opposite side wall. A feed or drinking trough (17) at one end of the cage helps to attraact the animal into it.
