The container (3) has an open top and semi-rigid plastic walls (15) that allow a vacuum to be created inside it when packed with a portion (5) of a meat product such as finely-chopped steak and closed by a seal (13). A protective gas atmosphere can be provided in the container, and an absorber of oxygen (21) placed inside it. The meat product can be fresh or frozen, and is made so that it can be turned out onto a plate with no appreciable change in its shape or compactness. The container itself is at least 3.5 cm deep and between 3.5 and 6 cm across at the top.
