During the production of a bath of volcanic lava in a furnace equipped with a refractory hearth, the energy required for the melting of the lava is produced by the exothermic reduction of a metal oxide and a reducing agent. The metal produced is separated from the lava by gravity and collected in the lower part of the hearth. An independent claim is also included for a device for putting this method into service.
