The terminal has a medium access control (MAC) layer coupled to a processor (DT) that processes received telephone signals. The processor includes a digital signal processing (DSP) module (MT) that controls the quality of sound reproduction. The module detects noise signals as a function of noise data in the presence of received telephone signals and subtracts a portion of noise signals determined from the telephone signals. The DSP module determines a comfort noise level to be generated as a function of noise data in the absence of voice activity.
