The plates each have lateral pivots (240) and are connected in pairs by an articulated linkage (270). A counterweight is made for the plate assembly and the mass of the counterweight varies depending on the inclination of the plates to provide a traction proportional to the angle of incline of the plates. The decanter vessel (1) has a loaded liquid inlet and a decanted liquid outlet, and a decantation route is made of an assembly of plates held spaced apart to allow the liquid to circulate. The plates can swing between two extreme positions, one inclined to the vertical and the other vertical. The counterweight is carried on a lever arm such that the moments of the plates and the counterweight(s) balance. The counterweight is made of unit masses connected together by a cable, chain or other articulation. The assembly rests on a seat and when the plates swing in the inclined position, the counterweight unfolds and the whole of the masses compensate the load exerted on the linking cable. When the plates return to the vertical position, the masses return to rest one after another on the seat, thus progressively reducing the mass of the counterweight. The counterweight is installed in the inlet shaft. One counterweight is associated with each of the two sides of the plate assembly. The decanter includes an actuator to displace and block the plates in the chosen position. The actuator is a winch. The mass of the counterweight balances the plate assembly in the extreme inclined position. The pivots of the plates (203) are placed at the bottom and the articulated linkage between the plates is plated at the top of the plates. The plates are connected together by removable pins. The decanter has two rails installed at the bottom with reservoirs divided at regular intervals, less than the minimum distance between two plates in the vertical position, to receive the plates in a way that controls their spacing.
