Use of specific proteins, peptides and antibodies to prepare a reagent for detecting and optionally serotyping a coronavirus (CV) associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The specific reagents are: (a) a protein or peptide (I) encoded by a 29746 base pair (bp) sequence (1), given in the specification; (b) a mono- or poly-clonal antibody (Ab), or its fragment, directed against (I); or (c) a protein/peptide chip or filter that contains (I) or Ab, or its fragments. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) method for detecting CV by treating a sample with the specified reagents and detecting any antigen-antibody complex formed; (2) a kit for detecting CV that includes any of the specified reagents; (3) an immunogenic composition that contains at least one of (I), specified DNA or RNA sequences (II), a recombinant expression vector that contains (II), or a cDNA bank that contains (II); and (4) immune complexes formed between an isolated protein or peptide and an Ab directed specifically against an epitope of CV.
