Producing an active agent for combating the effects of aging comprising dissolving baccharis powder in a water-glycol medium, separating the soluble and insoluble phases by decantation, filtering the soluble phase and either concentrating the soluble phase by ultrafiltration, nanofiltration or reverse osmosis or spray- or freeze-drying the soluble phase. Independent claims are also included for: (1) active agent produced as above, containing hydroxycinnamates, flavones and flavonols and having a solids content of 5-60 g/l, a pH of 4-7 and a polyphenol content of 0.2-4 g/l; (2) cosmetic composition containing 0.1-20% of the active agent in the form of a gel, cream, ointment, lotion or emulsion that can be applied to the skin to combat collagen degradation by metalloproteinases.
