The method involves detecting on an image a unit associated with a particular vascular structure and corresponding to thrombus (20). The structure is cut out along a series of cutting planes extending perpendicularly to a central line of the structure. Contours (21) of the section of the thrombus are found in each plane. A cross sectional view of a cutting plane of interest is displayed, on which the contours are highlighted. An independent claim is also included for a tool for processing a three dimensional radiological image.
