The method involves determining connections of switches or cross connects (12A-12C) of low level layers by interrogating database of connections of switches or cross connects of low level layers of a data transmission network. A database of physical connections of the data transmission network is constructed from a pair of router interfaces in order to establish an entire architecture of the network.
