The device has a tubular duct (18) with a fuel return hole (26) and a pressure relief valve (20) arranged on its one end that is away from a fuel distribution ramp (10). The valve acts as a de-airing valve and a drain valve of the ramp. The valve is axially movable between a primary position (24) in which the valve disconnects the hole and the ramp and a secondary position (28) in which the hole is connected to the ramp. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine particularly a spark ignition engine with direct injection, of a motor vehicle.
