The device has a stack of electrochemical cells connected through bipolar separating plates. Each plate has a bundle of heat pipes (3) that are vertically disposed when a fuel cell is in operating position. The pipes contain coolant that changes to a vapor/liquid phase at an operating temperature of the cell. The pipes are projected on an upper face (5) of the plates and covered by a case fixed in a hermetic manner at the upper face. An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell constituted by a stack of electrochemical cells.
