The sill has a support (22) connected to a rail car beam (16) and a strip (24) retained by the support. The strip is moved between a normal position and a retracted position with respect to the support. Clamping surfaces (30A, 30B) of the strip maintain the strip against the clamping surfaces of the support, such that friction force is established between the strip and the support.
