The device has a sealing unit (3) made of elastically deformable foam and placed between two jaws (5, 6). A rod and a handle move the jaws towards each other along a compression direction from one position until to an expansion position of the unit (3) in a centrifugal direction perpendicular to the former direction. An annular locking clip (11) cooperates with one of bulge portions (10) to retain the jaws in the expansion position. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a hollow unit of a motor vehicle (B) a method of soundproofing a hollow unit of a motor vehicle.
